The Khap of the Tai Dam: Timbre and Archival Memory In-Person
The Tai Dam are an ethnic minority with communities in Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and the United States, and khap is their main vocal genre. Dr. John Latartara, an Associate Professor of Music Theory at the University of Mississippi, discusses Tai Dam khap and its timbral consistencies through a share of musical examples from his own original field recordings in Southeast Asia and the United States. His 24 recordings represent a diverse and unique sampling of this distinct vocal genre.
