Python Coding Essentials for Data Science In-Person

This four-part workshop series introduces the essential Python skills needed for data science and analysis. Rather than focusing on Python syntax in isolation, I will highlight the essential syntax alongside the core concepts and packages most relevant for working with data. You will gain hands-on experience applying Python to load, preprocess, analyze, and visualize data, building a solid foundation for data-driven projects and research.

While many people use AI or Large Language Models (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) to generate Python code, my goal in this workshop is to help you grasp the fundamentals behind that generated code. Even if you rely on LLMs, you will learn the essential skills to interpret the generated code, spot potential errors, and build confidence in your coding.

The workshop meets once a week on Mondays for four weeks. No prior Python experience is required. I will use Google Colab, a free cloud-based platform for Python coding. If you are new to Colab, I recommend attending the Introductory Workshop on Google Colab first: https://calendar.lib.olemiss.edu/event/14862041
