Maria Zoccola - Poetry Reading and Q&A
Poet and educator Maria Zoccola will read selections from her debut collection of poetry Helen of Troy, 1993, just published by Scribner. Part myth retelling, part character study, this sharp, visceral collection reimagines Helen of Troy from Homer's Iliad as a disgruntled houswife in 1990s Tennessee. Reinventing plot points from the classic myth-such as the story of Helen's birth, the competition for Helen, and Helen's marriage and abduction-Zoccola removes the much-maligned mythic beauty from Ancient Greece and grants her a voice and agency over her own life.
