Python Basics Series

Python Basics Series

Python Basics is an introductory seven-week, in-person series to help graduate students become familiar with the Python programming language and is led by the UM Libraries' Scholar Support and Data Services (SSDS) Department. This series is intended for attendees who have little or no programming experience.

Python is one of the world's most popular programming languages and is widely used for machine learning, data science, text analysis, and other research applications. The curriculum covers the basics of assigning variables, using operators and built-in functions, manipulating text strings, working with data in lists and dictionaries, working with tabular data, and plotting data.

Graduate students who are available to attend all seven sessions will have first priority for registration. Each session in the workshop series builds on the previous session, therefore you must be able to attend all seven dates to participate in the series. The workshops will take place from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM over the course of seven Mondays during the spring semester:

  • Monday, March 18
  • Monday, March 25
  • Monday, April 1
  • Monday, April 8
  • Monday, April 15
  • Monday, April 22
  • Monday, April 29

Each session will be held in-person in classroom 106D, located on the first floor of the J.D. Williams Library. For additional information, contact Dr. Shelby Watson at sahilton@olemiss.edu.
