State of Open Access: 2023 Update

State of Open Access: 2023 Update

This year's International Open Access Week theme Community over Commercialization encourages conversations about open scholarship, specifically looking at how the open initiatives (access, data, science) have evolved and in what ways have then served the best interst of academic and public community.

Specific questions raised in the theme announcement include:

  • What is lost when a shrinking number of coproations control knowledge production rather than researchers themselves?
  • What options for the use of community-controlled infrastructure already exist that might better serve the intersts of the rsearch community and the public (such as preprint servers, repositories, and open publishing platforms)?
  • Can commercialization ever support the public interest?

In our presentation, we will contextualize specific actions and initiatives by the UM libraries alongside these important questions. This interactive presentation will actively seek audience engagement so that we can discuss these issues as a community.
